Gas powered motor scooters are becoming an increasingly popular mode of transport. With gas prices rising, a scooter which can get up to 100mpg is an economical alternative to a car or SUV for short journeys. It's also much easier to find a place to park a motor scooter in a city than it is to find a place to park a car, and so commuting by scooter is becoming more popular. Another factor in the increasing popularity of scooters has been the availability of low cost gas powered motor scooters from China. Chinese scooters often sell for 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of Japanese and European scooters.

Of course you don't get something for nothing, and so if you're paying 1/2 to 1/3 of what you would for a European or Japanese motor scooters, you don't get as much. You don't get the same level of quality, you don't get the same degree of reliability and you don't get a dealer network who can fix and maintain your scooter for you. However if you have a mechanical aptitude, don't mind getting your hands dirty and you're preprared to do much of the maintenance and possibly repair yourself, then it's reasonable to take a look at the lower cost Chinese scooters. If you want the highest quality, best reliability and you don't want to get your hands dirty, you would be better off looking at a Japanese or European (Italian) scooter.

The links on the left will take you through the process of deciding if a gas powered motor scooter is a reasonable means of transport for you, give you some idea of the benefits of scooter ownership and help you decide which type of scooter would best suit your needs.
