Review - Fieldsheer Mercury Pants for all weather riding

Some time ago I purchased a pair of Fieldsheer Mercury pants. I tend to use them as overpants, but they could also be worn as regular pants. For cold weather they a quilted liner which can be removed for warmer weather riding. The finish is excellent with high quality zippers and seams and they have adjustable knee armor as well as removable SP memory foam hip pads. The pants themselves even have some small areas of built in padding around the back and on the hips.

So far I've found them pretty comfortable and they are certainly nice with the liner installed when riding in cold weather. There's a full length leg zipper which makes it easy to put them on over boots. The material uses is mostly 600 denier Carbolex (a synthetic polymer) with stronger 1680 denier material in areas likely to impact in case of a crash (knees, hips etc).

The only area in which the Mercury pants (and especially the black ones which I bought) are not ideal is when the weather gets really hot. Though they are technically breathable, even with the lining removed they can get pretty hot when the temperature gets up into the 80s and the sun is beating down. There are a couple of front pockets which also serve as thigh vents, but they don't do much in the way of cooling.

Though I have (fortunately!) not crash tested the Fieldsheer Mercury pants, I'm very happy with them so far. I"m sure they would provide both good abrasion protection on the case of a slide, plus (and just as important) good knee and hip protection in case of impacts. They also have reflective piping to enhance visibility at night which is nice to have (especially with the black pants).

If you ride in all weather and want protection from the cold and rain as well as road hazards, I can certainly recommend the Fieldsheer Mercury pants. I take a 33 waist in most pants and I found that the "Large" size fit pretty well as an overpant and I could wear then as my only pants if I snugged up the waist adjustment a bit.
